Isocarboxazid blocks the breakdown (oxidative deamination) of biogenic amines by inhibiting MAO, thereby increasing the concentrations of norepinephrine and 5-hydroxytrytamine at central aminergic receptors. These neurotransmitters are involved in sustaining mood and emotions. Isocarboxazid is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor that works by increasing the levels of certain chemicals in the brain. Isocarboxazid is used to treat symptoms of depression that may include anxiety, panic, or phobias. Isocarboxazid is usually given after other antidepressants have been tried without successful treatment of symptoms.

The pharmacokinetics of isocarboxazid have not been studied, but phenelzine and tranylcypromine appear to have fairly comparable properties (Mallinger & Smith 1991). Isocarboxazid is contraindicated in patients with hypertension (including patients receiving antihypertensive agents), cardiac disease, or confirmed or suspected cerebrovascular defect (e.g., cerebrovascular disease, intracranial bleeding, increased intracranial pressure, recent head trauma, stroke), because of the possible adverse effects on blood pressure.
